PhD candidate Philip J. Gorter de Vries will defend his thesis, in which he assesses the potential of acetogenic Bacteria to relieve the petrochemical industry of its fossil ressource dependence.
Firstly, the greenhouse gas crisis and the specific contribution of petrochemistry are put into numbers to assess the impact of replacing the industry by an acetogen-based one. Then, the ideal setup and conditions for a gas-fermentation process are searched for, focusing specifically on fermentation temperature and possible products.
Lastly, the claim of their ancient nature is refuted and an alternative theory for the chemistry that led to the first living cell is provided.
